The Importance of Understanding Your Target Audience
How can you market to prospective customers if you don’t know who they are? Simple. You can’t. Well, you can but you won’t reach them very well. We’re here to give you some expert tips on how to figure out who your target audience is and how to effectively reach them.
Who Are They?
The first step to understanding your audience is to build an ideal customer demographic or persona. Who ideally is using your product or service? A simple way to do this is by identifying defining characteristics which can be done by answering a few simple questions.
- What are / age range your target consumers?
- Are they a specific gender?
- What are their hobbies/interests?
- Where do they work?
- Where do they live?
- What are some of their defining characteristics? (ie: new parents, recent college graduates, homeowners)
The more specific you get with the characterization questions, the more defined your target audience becomes.
What Do They Want?
Now that you know who your target audience is, you must determine what they want and care about in order to effectively capture their interest. This can be done by determining their need and then telling them how your product or service fulfills it. For example, if you’re marketing headphones to avid music lovers, you might want to focus on the superior sound quality rather than the sleek design. While your product might have both, knowing your audience can determine which aspect you emphasize in your marketing.
How Do You Reach Them?
You know who your target audience is and what they want to hear, now how do you reach them? Determining the correct channels to market to your audience is just as important as what you say. You can have the most creative and catchy content, but if your audience isn’t going to see it, it doesn’t really do a whole lot for your bottom line. For example, marketing to young adults with a newspaper ad is not going to be as effective as marketing to them using social media. Know where your audience spends their time and make sure your brand shows up there.
