  • Keywords: Make sure every page has a designated keyword and that you organically use it throughout the page. Choose keywords based on volume, difficulty, and intent. We use Semrush and Ahrefs to conduct our keyword research. Ahrefs offers a free tool to webmasters!
  • Headers: Be sure to include H1, H2, H3, H4s, etc., as needed throughout the page.
  • H1: Each page should have only one H1, and it should be used as your title before any other header. It should also include the keyword.
  • H2: Every page should have H2’s as well. There is no limit to the number of H2s, but around 50-60% of them should organically include the keyword, especially for the ones toward the top of the page.
  • H3s, H4s, etc: These headers should be used chronologically under one another. They “live” under H2s. This is for ADA compliance and so search engines can easily crawl a page and understand what it is about.
  • Meta Descriptions: This piece of metadata should be found on every single page! Include the keyword in it, and make sure it’s around ~150-160 characters.
  • Title Tags: Another piece of metadata that should be included on all pages on your site. They should be ~30 and 60 characters and include that page’s primary keyword.
  • URLs: Include your keyword in your URLs. These are the first things Google sees, so it’s important to get the message across ASAP.
  • URL Length: Keep your URLs short. It’s been proven that shorter ones rank better than longer ones!
  • Technical SEO: Ensure your website is technically sound and free from errors. You can run these using Screaming Frog or more you can use more basic versions on Ahrefs or Semrush.
  • Google Analytics: Be sure that GA4 is set up and tracking your site’s performance. It’s free!
  • Google Search Console: Another free Google SEO tool for tracking. Be sure it’s set up, and submit your sitemaps to GSC.
  • Create a Sitemap: This helps search engines crawl and index your website’s pages.
  • Blog: Useful content is the best way to rank for your top-wanted keywords. Be sure to optimize your blog content for SERPs using our tips here. Post regularly; the more, the better!
  • No Duplicate Content: Duplicate content issues happen when two or more URLs or written content on your site are identical or very similar. Keep it original!
  • Word Count: The least number of words published on landing pages should be 300. We say if you can get more content there, do it! In our professional SEO opinions, you should be publishing blogs with at least 800 words
  • Redirects: If you want to remove a page, don’t just delete it. Find a page you want to replace it with and use a tool like the plug-in “Redirection” to avoid bad redirects.
  • Link Building: Get your site out there! Email similar sites to you, offer useful content for them to share, and sign up for local listings. You can use tools like Moz Local to help.
  • Images: Each page should have engaging images. If you have branded imagery, great! If not, stock imagery will do the trick.
  • Alt Text: Every image should have proper alt text. Include the keyword in these only if it’s relevant. Most importantly, you want these to be useful to those who may be disabled and comply with ADA regulations.
  • Socials: Share your content and other updates on social media to boost your site’s authority and traffic.
  • Google my Business: Set up your GMB listing for local search and ask your customers for reviews! Bonus points if your profile and bio are optimized for SEO keywords.
  • Yoast: If you’re using WordPress, install the plugin Yoast to help you update metadata and check your SEO score for every page.
  • Readability: Keep your page easily readable. You can do this by writing shorter sentences, organizing your content with headers, including images, using bullet points, and linking to useful resources.
  • Internal Links: Develop an internal linking strategy and link to different pages using anchor texts, not URLs. Include the destination page’s primary keyword in these anchor texts. Don’t link to and from the same pages, though. This should be a one-way street.
  • External Links: Linking to high-authority sites, even if they may seem to be competitors, it can help establish you in the same categories as these big dog sites.
  • Link Text: Do not link to anything on a keyword you’re trying to rank for. Meaning if your primary keyword for a blog post is “Denver marketing company”, don’t highlight that phrase and insert a link.
  • Site Speed: Slow sites get less traffic. There are many tools that offer speed tests with suggestions on how to make your site faster.
  • Mobile-Friendly: Be sure your site looks great on mobile devices! Check all your pages on your phone.
  • Robots.txt: Create a robots.txt file to specify what actions crawlers are allowed to do on each page of your site.
  • Schema Markup: You can use Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool or Rich Results Test to help your content be better understood.
